Google XML Sitemaps Generator for WordPress
The Google XML Sitemaps Plugin has become a very famous plugin to generate the sitemaps for WordPress blog. It has more than 7 million downloads in WordPress plugins directory. Install the plugin to your WordPress blog and activate it. Once you activated, inside your WordPress dashboard panel, go to Settings » XML-Sitemap, and for the first time you have to generate it by clicking on “click here” as shown in the below image,
Once you generated, you can check your sitemap by going to “/sitemap.xml“, and later you can submit this sitemap to Google, Bing and Ask. The default setting for sitemaps under this plugin is best for use, but if you want to change these options, you can change as your need. Below is another method to generate your WordPress sitemaps.
How To Create Sitemaps for WordPress using SEO by Yoast Plugin
If you are using SEO by Yoast plugin, you don’t need to have any other plugins to generate your sitemaps for your WordPress blog. I am also using this plugin, which has inbuilt function to generate different sitemaps such as for pages, posts, categories, tags. If you don’t have this plugin, then you can install this plugin to WordPress, or you can use the above method to create your sitemaps. Let we consider you are using SEO by Yoast plugin into your WordPress blog. Therefore, here is how to generate sitemaps using SEO by Yoast plugin.
Inside your WordPress admin panel on the left side, click on SEO » XML Sitemaps
Make a tick on “Check this box to enable XML sitemap functionality.” This will expand the menu. Make sure to tick on “Ping Yahoo! and Ping Ask.com.” I don’t have any idea why Yahoo and ask is not set to ping by default. I don’t want to include our pages and simple URLs to sitemap, so I have included it into “Exclude post types,” and don’t want to use tags archive pages so I have included it into “Exclude taxonomies.” You may select these options as your need.
Now, finally click on Save Settings.
You can check your sitemaps by “/sitemap_index.xml“. It may contain your post, category, tag and simple url sitemaps. You need to submit only “/sitemap_index.xml” to the search engines as a sitemaps. Search engines automatic detect the sitemaps inside “/sitemap_index.xml“.
Once you have generated your sitemaps. You need to submit the sitemaps to search engines like Google, Bing.

Do you know if there is any downside to submitting sitemaps with both Google XML Sitemaps and the Yoast plug-in?
It is best to use only one proper sitemap that have mostly all the internal links of your blog.

Firstly, I would like to thanks for visit this blog. If you are using XML sitemap provided by Yoast, then go to your post editor, and click on “Advanced” under “WordPress SEO by Yoast” options, and choose the proper priority by selecting in drop down menu under “Sitemap priority” option.
